In ancient times, a ruler would put his image in a city to designate his authority and power is present there, even though he physically is not. The second commandment tells us God forbids images of himself, especially as worship, but not because we might get it wrong; it’s because he already has placed his image in worship. To present human-created images of him displays our rivalry, not our piety. It says we will not heed his authority over worship; we will replace it with our own.
